Sculptures are now a common feature in most luxurious pads with sculptures being a part of interiors as well as exteriors. Even if one does see new sculptors emerging every year with new trends and designs in this segment, there are certain famous sculptures that will still remain to be a source of inspiration for all sculptors and lovers of art. Famous Sculptures:

David:
When we mention sculptures, the first name I have always associated it with, has always been the most famous sculptor and pure genius- Michelangelo. This multitalented personality created many masterpieces that are beyond compare till date. Michelangelo’s David is work of art that represents the Renaissance sculpture. This famous sculpture has unveiled in the year 1504. The flowing lines and the well-balanced form has seen itself being imitated by aspiring sculptors all over the world. The proportions used by Michelangelo for David are not really as per the original proportions seen in a human body. There is a theory with regards to this by experts. Some say the sculpture of David was supposed to be placed on a high pedestal; therefore only then would the proportions appear to be correct when viewed from a distance.

Pietà:
Yet another masterpiece from Michelangelo, the Pietà is also one of the most famous sculptures around the world. This marble sculpture is about Mother Mary holding the body of Jesus on her lap after the Crucifixion. The Pietà blends the Renaissance style with a natural touch. The Pietà also remains to be one of Michelangelo’s famous works.

The Thinker:
This highly regarded sculpture is the creation of the genius Auguste Rodin. The Thinker is about a man who is in a seated position in deep thought; this is supposed to have a philosophical representation since it depicts an internal struggle with oneself. The Thinker was initially named as The Poet and was supposed to be representation of Dante. Till date, The Thinker remains to be a popular sculpture and has seen many representations of the original forms in all types of sizes!

The Kiss:
French sculptor Auguste Rodin was a genius at his best, which can be witnessed in the marble sculptor named as The Kiss. The Kiss depicts a couple locked in an embrace. This famous sculpture also invited controversies because of the suggested eroticism seen in the pose. The Kiss has an interesting story behind its creation. It is supposed to depict an Italian noblewoman seen with her husband’s younger brother, deeply in love. Initially, The Kiss was titled as Francesca da Ramini till critics suggested the current name in 1887.

Apollo and Daphne:
This famous sculpture is the creation of a genius named Gian Lorenzo Bernini. This sculpture is life sized and sculpted in marble. This sculpture tells a different story in every angle. It depicts the story of Apollo, in love with Daphne after he was struck by cupid’s arrow. But a lead arrow strikes Daphne at the same time, by cupid. This was done to ensure she does not fall in love with Apollo. The sculpture then depicts the scenario of love and denial.

Venus De Milo:
The Venus de Milo is one of the most remarkable and famous sculptures that is a perfect example of ancient Greek sculpture. The original sculptor of this famous work of art was initially hazy. It is believed that this work is a creation of Alexandros of Antioch. This is due to an inscription found on its plinth. The current state of Venus de Milo is without the arms and the plinth, which were lost way back in time. This famous sculpture depicts Venus or Aphrodite. She is shown standing with the lower torso covered in drapery.

Aphrodite of Cnidus:
The Aphrodite of Cnidus is considered to be the most renowned works of famous sculptor Praxiteles. He was known for his representation of the nude female form. This particular sculpture is more famous due to its beautiful structure. It is rumored that there were two versions created of the same sculpture; one was shown completely draped in cloth and the other, a complete nude. The nude version created quite a stir in that era.

India is known for its famous sculptures, which are present in various parts of India. These famous sculptures speak volumes about the rich culture and heritage of India. The first instance of sculptures dates back to the Indus valley civilization. The Ellora caves in India showcase many such examples. The Ajanta caves also have many beautiful examples of ancient Indian sculptures and paintings as well. Khajuraho is known for its sensual sculptures and is also recognized as a World Heritage Site. The Buddhist sculptures of Sarnath and Sanchi are also known all over the world.
